I went to an art exhibition a while ago at the Tobacco Factory and as I was scanning the work on the wired walls, it dawned on me that there wasn’t one piece that hadn’t been “red dotted”. It wasn’t too hard to see why. The exhibition called Jofolio was just brilliant. The young artist, Jo Conlon was modestly chatting to, well, everyone and her work couldn’t have gone down better. I decided that it was time to introduce myself to Jo, and for iZine to introduce Jo to Bristol. She’s small, a little timid, very modest, and just lovely! And her website is pretty cool too.
As you can see from these few pieces, Jo works in a variety of styles and medium from fine art oil paintings to vector drawings and mixed media prints, a little something for everyone I guess. She has done portraits of the rich and famous, including Jet (the fit one from the old Gladiators) and Rik Mayall (the rudest one from Bottom). You can see from her work that Jo manages to capture that little something that makes you want to look just once more. I fell in love with the snow leopard, therefore a print now adorns my bedroom, and I find it amusing when friends ask why I have a photo of a big cat on my wall.
You can see more of Jo’s work on her website, http://www.joconlon.com and I think you will be pleasantly surprised by the variety and versatility that this young Stonehouse based artist offers. From briefly chatting to her at the Jofolio exhibition, it is obvious that Jo has so much passion for her work, which radiates from her collections.
Jo agreed to write me a little something about herself, but I think that her work does most of the talking...
From the artist herself...
“I moved back to Stonehouse over a year ago, having spent time in Exeter (I studied Fine Art there) and Bristol, to focus on my art. I work full time as a graphic designer in Cheltenham and spend my evenings and weekends doing what I love; illustrating and painting! I’m always open to new ideas and take inspiration from real life, friends and family and I am available for portrait commissions if anyone is interested!
Jofolio was my biggest solo show to date and turned out to be a real success for me which I’m really happy about. If you would like to see more of my work, just hop onto my website, http://www.joconlon.com and have a look round! I’m also holding another exhibition entitled Them Lot at The Tobacco Factory, Bristol in October 2009, so make a note in your diaries!”
